You have to very much be a “yes man”. I was willing to sacrifice time with friends and my hobbies in order to get the one word of affirmation from my manager. And that dedication was rewarded. But as soon as I started trying to enforce better work life balance for myself, I was fired “for performance”. Leadership were just suck-ups to the CEO who didn’t actually look out for their direct reports and it unfortunately took being forcibly removed for me to realize that.
