Long story short, this company (namely the owner/CEO) does not respect or value its employees. This has been proven by an abnormally high turnover. Although the team has only included 5-6 people at a time, in the past year, a total of 9 employees have left. 4 of those were employed for less than a month, and 3 were employed for less than a year. Actually, 1 employee was fired in October 2015, and hired back in July 2016. • The owner and CEO is definitely a salesman. He will impress you in the interview process by describing the company as "growing rapidly" and having "Christian values." • The company IS growing rapidly, but at the expense of the employees. New clients keep coming and coming, and every employee is overloaded. The owner/CEO once told us, "I can't let the team's limitations keep me from bringing on new clients." • While the owner/CEO likes to talk about his many Christian values, his actions speak louder than his words. He is disrespectful, sexist, and passive aggressive. He repeatedly talks badly about his employees behind their back. Instead of giving an employee direct feedback, he passive-aggressively tells another employee about it. He condemns employees without even giving them the opportunity to improve. When he is thinking about firing someone, he gossips about it with other employees. • His sexism is not only offensive, it's borderline illegal. He has made it clear through his words and actions that he thinks women are inferior and less intelligent than men. He treats his female employees like children, including commenting on our appearances and making fun of us. On a serious note, one employee was pregnant last year and not only did she have to take an unpaid maternity leave, she was constantly discriminated against. Her maternity leave coincided with Christmas, and she was the only employee who did not get a holiday bonus. When she returned and needed a private space to "pump," she was initially told that she could do it in the bathroom (we have open cubicles). She was eventually allowed to use a vacant office, which was soon filled by a new employee, then forcing her to then move to a small closet because it was the only other space with a door. On the rare occasion that she had to stay home with her sick kid(s), the owner/CEO would grumble and complain. • I was constantly presented with lose-lose scenarios. Either make an informed decision on my own and get yelled at for not consulting my boss, or consult him about a decision and get a condescending answer about how I should be more of a self-starter. He loves to micromanage everyone, and nothing is perfect enough for his impossible standards. He would go through and re-do things that we had worked on for hours, without giving us a reason. He belittles his employees for every tiny mistake. • Finally, he is unintelligent and uninformed in the field of marketing. He is stuck in his old-fashioned ways and is too stubborn to accept any fresh ideas. He sticks to the same formula for every client, website, graphic, promotion, etc (e.g. eBooks and keyword-stuffed blog posts). He does not understand modern SEO/SEM, so he still values keywords and H1s over the UI/UX of a website. Most crucially, he does not put thorough research into any of his strategies, but instead implements ideas at random. • // • Some explanations of my ratings: - Career opportunities are slim to none. He does not promote from within. - Compensation is below average. There are no health benefits. Current job postings indicate otherwise, but he has been promising them for months and nothing has been implemented. - Work/life balance is fine. Hours are typically 8:30-5:30 but can be negotiated. You WILL be expected to stay late many nights. And the owner/CEO will sometimes invade your nights/weekends/vacations with texts and calls.
