Vantaggi

The shift I worked was called a super shift which was three days every weekend. We worked 12.25 Hr shifts starting at 6:45 AM and ending at 7pm. We got a premium and was paid to match up to 40 hours since we always worked on weekends. This meant I had 4 days off every week, and when it was a stat holiday, I only worked 2 days but still was paid for full time wages. I enjoyed the work hard rest well routine. It kept me on my feet and active so I didn't have to scheduling in a lot of exercise because it's a labor intensive position. Once a month they have a pizza day or BBQ day depending on the season. They have 1 paid day of bereavement leave. They have a workout room that is pretty nice and usually empty You're free to use 24/7 after probation period is over. They Match RRSP Contributions up to 1200 a year and have a decent benefits package through Blue cross.

Svantaggi

The quality of work that was necessary for the prints had High standards and It was difficult to maintain focus and not miss defects especially after the 6 hour mark (only half way through the day) let alone by the time sunday rolled around. There are no buses that can get you to and from this location to be at work on time during the weekends so you have to either rely on your own car/transportation or develop a carpool relationship with other coworkers, which is the majority of the staff that get to and from work. The training was intensive (It takes 1-3 months to become competent enough to operate a press solo, Knowing how to mix inks, and operate) and although we were paid higher than minimum wage, for the work and training necessary for this position, non of my coworkers believed we were paid enough. They had a culture of "Don't talk about your wages" and tried to discourage employees by making meetings where our managers were required to tell us not to talk about our wages even though that is illegal. When I learned a new press that was more complicated I was offered the raise that would have been given to me anyway during my Yearly review So there is little incentive for learning taking on more responsibility. I was only allotted 16 Hrs of paid sick time per year, (no unpaid sick time really) but for a 12 hour shift, That only covers one and a half days. I was not properly trained in WHIMS Until a year after working there already despite working with on press and lacquer and various other chemicals. (I was shown where the books were during training, but the full course proving I knew how to get the information I needed was not covered thoroughly until that year mark.) Steel toed shoes are not required of this position, but they were trying to encourage print operators to move large metal barrels even though we were ill equipped. New print operators are constantly trying to fill the positions of old print operators leaving for better pay elsewhere and better companies. The Positions (all of them,) due to being so labor intensive, created a lot of work place injuries. More than half the employees have back issues that the company insists is not due to the work involved there and you can't prove was. 12 Hours of labor intensive work each day can create repetitive stress injuries Easily especially if you're not already an active or young employee. Dryer fires are a constant work hazard here there are fire blankets at every press but you have to be ready and willing to deal with flaming vinyl. They tried to get me to train new Hire after only working there for 3 months despite the complications of running a press and not being confident in trouble shooting on my own yet. I had a coworker who had worked there for 5 years, and wanted to visit home in the Philippines for 1 month. Sunwest has a general rule that no one is allowed to take more than 3 weeks off in a row. They wouldn't make an accommodation despite the fact that she had worked for them so long and so well, and that she wouldn't likely go to the Philippines again for a long time after still. She ended up having to quit. I was told that Bereavement leave for direct family was 8 Hr's paid, (The paid isn't mandated by law and was nice,) but- only 3 days total of leave. and I was told I had to have it approved by my manager before I could take it. (this is wrong. regardless if they have the staff you're entitled to 5 days of unpaid bereavement leave according to law for Manitoba.) I would only recommend this job to someone who needed the week off and was willing to give up EVERY WEEKEND (no exceptions unless you're booking holidays,) that is young, Quick witted, creative for the troubleshooting, and physically able/active.
