There is a clear divide between contractors (red badge) and non-contractors (white badge). There are times where the contractors are doing probably the same amount of work and managing, as their white badge manager. At the end of the day, your employer is still Adecco and you're probably making less than half of the salary the white badge person is making. Also, by the end of 2 years, if you're lucky and talented, you'll be converted to a white badge employee. If the timing is off, you'll be thrown away and they'll move on to hiring new people to replace you. This is a hard situation to be in. Once you work at Google, it'll be hard to transition anywhere else (because of the perks and bright people) but the experience you'll gain here will be great. It is just difficult to watch projects you've started and worked on being passed on to new people that you just trained (to take over your role). Contractors make up about 50% of the entire company, they are part of the reason the self-driving car project has gotten so far at Waymo, and yet, they are not allowed to attend company-wide meetings, know about certain company news, and receive company swag (to name a few). There is a clear divide because contractors are not Waymo employees. Everyone works hard on the project but only a few reap the benefits. After working at Waymo and experiencing the contractor dynamic, the idea of Google being a place that "does no evil" and has great integrity is nothing but a fairy tale.
