Svantaggi
At first, this company felt like an ideal workplace. We worked a five-day week, and Fridays often ended at noon, allowing employees to spend time together through team activities. The culture appeared positive, collaborative, and employee-focused.
For many Indonesians, the pay can initially seem attractive. Salaries are generally above the local minimum wage, making the opportunity appealing to those seeking international exposure and career growth.
However, the working environment shifted.
Projects would often be delayed from higher-up bottlenecks, yet employees were still held accountable for missed timelines. The team-building activities gradually disappeared, with long working hours becoming a standard.
Work-life balance became difficult to maintain. Employees were frequently expected to remain available during public holidays and personal time. Missed family events, disrupted travel plans, and situations where employees found themselves working while on leave became increasingly common.
The workload also had a noticeable impact on personal relationships and well-being. Working overtime and recurring late-night collaboration sessions happen so often.
Employee departures were often handled in a manner that felt impersonal. In some cases, resigning employees received little acknowledgment of their contributions, and transitions were not always managed professionally. This created an environment where employees could feel undervalued despite years of service.
Job security was another concern. Employment terminations could occur with no notice, insufficient explanation, no compensation, and, a lack of transparency regarding the decision-making process.
After many years, I had hoped to see meaningful reflection on the factors contributing to employee turnover and workplace dissatisfaction. Or at least, the company would recognize and value the commitment of long-serving employees.
Unfortunately, no.
