      Colloquio

      I started the process interviewing for another marketing role. I had two interviews with the hiring manager and then progressed to the final round which was group interviews (there were 5). Most of them were great, but one person, a VP who was the hiring managers boss, made it clear that he was only interested in hiring “the best” and that meant having a background in working at Marketo or Adobe (which I did not). He asked leading questions all focused on my current role vs a behavioral interview to assess if I could do the job or had relevant experience from other roles and projects. I did not expect to move forward based on that one interview, and was not sure I’d want to given his approach. The recruiter called me and said the team liked me but felt that role was not a fit, and moved me to a product marketing role interview process instead. I was willing to move forward because I liked everyone but that one person and felt the company was interesting. I had one interview with the hiring manager, followed by two group interviews. They went well til the last one- the head of sales asked me questions about what type of marketing tools I’d used and my excel proficiency, which I found inappropriate as he was not on the product marketing team and clearly did not have an understanding of what would be necessary in the role. I also was at a prior company for a short period of time, and despite providing examples time and time again and a clear reason for my short tenure (the company reorganized after hiring), he made it clear he thought I was a snowflake millennial and actually said to me “please ask all questions you have because I’d hate for you to join us and leave in 6 months because you don’t feel it’s a fit”. They did not offer me the role citing I did not have enough industrial experience (I have five years experience and I outlined many examples). It was clear to me this one person who was not qualified to evaluate me impacted the decision greatly, and while he said it was about my industrial experience, It was clear to me he had a problem with my one short tenure stay at an employer vs the solid resume I provided of other roles. I’d not recommend waisting time on this company- the interview process was grueling and the opinions of 40+ year old white men matter more than the hiring managers assessment or the entire test or the team. You won’t get an accurate answer for why you didn’t get the job because the people deciding can’t legally say what they mean. These mediocre white men clearly have privilege and prejudices and need training on how to conduct interviews professionally at minimum. I also provided a writing sample for the product marketing role and never received feedback. It was way too much time invested.

      Overall lengthy and could have been consolidated into panels. Each interview 30-45 minutes in length. After interview #5, they requested a project - an unpaid case study (project deliverable) and then wanted that presented to - presumably the team - at another interview, #6. I declined doing the project in lieu of having senior leadership experience, and providing alternative assets and demonstrated work, and was not selected to move forward in the process. Interviews: First interview - Recruiter / screen and high level questions about background Second interview - Hiring manager; culture fit, deeper qual discussion and dive into solution alignment and persona development Third interview - Peer on other team; similar to hiring manager discussion but more focus on collaboration and how product marketing feeds other functions Fourth interview - Peer on direct team; similar to interview 2 and 3 Fifth interview - Sales stakeholder interview; similar to interviews 2, 3, and 4 but more deep dive into enablement, persona development, and competitor tools The people were all kind and nice to speak with.
