      Colloquio

      Initial phone screen with recruiter, who was fantastic. The only thing that I wasn't impressed with was the lack of compensation conversation. All recruiters have compensation conversations during their initial screening calls to not waste time, so that was definitely frustrating. However, I was intrigued enough about the company/role to proceed. Expected a phone screen with the team manager, but they decided to move directly to onsites. Prompt scheduling of onsites and great communication from the recruiter, although it would have been nice to know the focus of the interviews and not just who was conducting them. Once onsite, it was like I was in the twilight zone. Quick office tour to the interview room, where I see that someone new has been added to my interview panel (not stressful at all!), in addition to the fact that one of the planned interviewers was non-existent on any internet search I tried, so now we're up to two people who I don't know anything about, and extending my 4-hour interviews to 4.5+ hours. My first interview is two recruiting team members, both of whom are based in Pittsburgh. One is visiting the Boston office and sitting next to me in the awkward conference room, and is giving off what I consider to be the least-friendly/welcoming vibes I have ever encountered, in both verbal and non-verbal cues. But then the other interviewer who is still in Pittsburgh joins via Zoom, and she makes the first interviewer look as sweet as pie. From the second the interview started, it was probably the most aggressive and self-involved interview I had ever been in. Just firing off question after question, making fun of my answers (no lie), and the more junior one in the office with me was clearly trying to assert some power that she felt was missing by asking me a question, which was really a 1/2 question, to which I answered, and then she told me I didn't understand the question. It was such a horrible way to start off my (almost 5 hour) interview process, and it became clear to me that there was some serious mean girl mentality happening on the team. The next interviews were much better, with very kind and welcoming Boston team members who asked great, albeit tough, questions but were not at all aggressive. I felt like we had good conversations, but I was honestly so shaken from the first interview that I had to excuse myself to the restroom multiple times just to have some time to bring my anxiety level down. I still have no idea what the interviewer whose information I couldn't find anywhere online actually did, because she didn't introduce herself, so that was an interesting interview because I had no idea what mentality/focus the questions were coming from, but she was still very kind. I finished up with the team manager, who promised me that she would be calling me within a week or two, and then I left extremely mentally exhausted and so confused about why such a seemingly great manager would keep toxic people like my first 2 interviewers on a team. Luckily I didn't have to worry about working with them, because of course, no one ever followed up. I never followed up because of the the Pittsburgh mean girl crew and I didn't want to work in that type of environment. But still, someone could have queued up a stock "thanks but no thanks" email template. It's always very telling when a recruiting team is so disrespectful as to not ever follow up, and managers don't keep their word. Not a good look.

Me: Answer Mean Girl Interviewer: No, you can't use those. They're a given. Me: Additional answer with multiple schools, one with a very prominent/prestigious CS program in Canada Mean Girl Interviewer 1: Really - I've never heard of that school Me: Well we hired x # of great candidates from this program in my previous role, and this program has a fantastic reputation Mean Girl Interviewer 2: Yeah x school does have x program (apparently validating my answer enough, although she's never been an actual campus recruiter) Mean Girl Interviewer 1: OK whatever moving on
