      Colloquio

Definitely one of the worst phone interviews I have ever had to endure. Unfortunately, I was assigned an interviewer (one of their engineers) who was not only a very poor communicator, but also somewhat impatient, aggressive, and egotistical. Out of the dozens of technical interviews I have done in the past, this one was by far the worst, as it left me feeling small and humiliated. Granted, I made a couple of mistakes during the interview, but I have never seen another interviewer handle the situation more poorly than this guy. He started to sound frustrated and to lose interest in answering my questions about the company. Worst of all, I don't think said interviewer was aware he was a poor communicator...I had a lot of trouble understanding him, as he couldn't really express himself clearly. How am I supposed to complete the coding challenge when I could hardly understand him? Also, on the parts I did get right, there was no positive feedback; I was grilled until I reached another dead end, which would have been fine if it didn't feel so much like this interviewer basically already had his mind set regarding my candidacy and was just bent on proving himself right. At the end of the day, this incident is quite an embarrassment for Asana, as it looks like they've failed to train their engineers to conduct interviews with professionalism. This particular engineer's behavior was shockingly unprofessional and contrasted sharply with the values Asana purports to embrace. What a shame.

Thank you for sharing your experience interviewing at Asana. Your review helped spark a refreshed dialogue around candidate experience here at Asana, and yesterday our co-Founder Justin Rosenstein sent the following memo to all staff. In the spirit of transparency and improvement, we wanted to share it with you. MINDFUL INTERVIEWING & ACHIEVING A GREAT CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE I’m honestly saddened that we contributed to such negative feelings and experience for this candidate. This is an opportunity for us to reflect on how all candidates perceive us during interviews no matter what the outcome is, and to remember that we are representing ourselves and Asana to the outside world in each of these interactions. It’s critical that we provide every candidate with a great experience. This is important as an end in itself: they are fellow human beings who deserve our respect, regardless of whether they’re a fit to work here. It’s also important as a means toward an end: if we develop a reputation for being arrogant or incompetent, then great people will understandably not want to work here, and our potential as a company will be severely limited. As we grow, we’re already investing in providing and developing more formal training around candidate experience. In the meantime, when we are conducting interviews, we encourage you to be mindful and remember these core principles of ensuring a great interview experience: - Empathize. Being evaluated is extremely stressful. - Be kind. Be compassionate. - Do whatever you can to make the candidate feel comfortable, at the beginning, middle, and end. - Be human. Make a human connection. How would you interact if you’d been friends for years? - Stay engaged. Make eye contact. - Smile. Use open body language, rather than leaning back or folding your arms. - Ensure you’re making the interaction a conversation, not an interrogation or feeling like one. If the candidate is struggling, encourage them and help find a better path to information exchange, rather than getting to a place of judging them. - Leave time to answer their questions. Even if you’re already sure you won’t be recommending that they advance to the next stage, maintain and offer the same enthusiasm you would give to someone who, say, had crushed their interview. Even if we do this perfectly, we may still occasionally get it wrong. But even these moments can still be a reminder to strive for excellence in our candidate experience. Thanks again for sharing and helping us improve. JR

Initial screening went well and I felt genuinely excited about the opportunity. The technical interview itself was different from what the preparation PDF described — less collaborative, minimal engagement from the interviewer's side. I didn't receive any feedback after the session; the interviewer went on sick leave and I waited several weeks before receiving a rejection email. I'm fine with rejection — that's part of the process. What was harder was the uncertainty and the lack of feedback. The prep materials set clear expectations around collaboration and communication, and the actual experience didn't match that.

Overall, it was a good experience. There was one interviewer who acted standoff-ish and strange. But, for the most part, it was conducted very professionally. What I didn't like was the Systems interview question, which is a very specific modelling problem and unless you've worked on building such a feature, it's unlikely that you'll recognize such a pattern and come up with a decent solution. And for a mid-level position, it's quite surprising. But I guess they gotta justify the high comps somehow. Also, infrastructure knowledge is not tested at all in this interview, which is atypical. The coding interviews were great. Study typical LLD problems. Leetcode is minimal and simple. Focus on understanding patterns and not memorizing solutions. The HM interview was great. He probed in ways typical EMs have never done before, and it gave me a really good impression of the company and his team, despite also not passing this interview, which I take full responsibility for.
