      Colloquio per Software Engineer

Ho presentato la mia candidatura online. La procedura ha richiesto 2 giorni. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso Blizzard Entertainment (Irvine, CA) nel mese di set 2014

      Colloquio

The interview process was stretched over two days for me. I was asked to come on site where I was given a knowledge exam, followed by five coding questions, followed by a white board question. Though everyone was nice, they all had this aura that you'd better be grateful to work at Blizzard. Very sub-par compensation. I have no desire to work in the games industry, Blizzard was just for practice, but I can safely say they are, by far, the most disorganized company I've interviewed with. My interview was stretched over two days because the recruiting team and the engineering team couldn't coordinate to figure out the right time. The recruiter got the time wrong, and I wasn't informed AT ALL until when the first interview was supposed to end. Turns out they never bothered to let me know that the interview was supposed to go on for another hour and a half; they just expected me to not have to do anything afterwards! The knowledge exam is the same one given to senior level staff, so a lot of the questions seem very daunting. Overall this area wasn't too bad. The coding questions which followed this exam were not too difficult, but the instructions were delivered improperly! The team mentioned that they didn't want you using C library functions, but then they realized that they didn't mention that in the instructions. That doesn't reflect well on the team if you leave a candidate alone with incorrect instructions... The team was fairly knowledgeable in C++, no issues there. They were actually pretty personable, although only two of them were really professional. Definitely not a culture fit. They had to nitpick one area of my code which was technically correct; they wanted to make sure that I could explain a certain variation of a keyword which would have made no difference in the program. This wasn't out of place necessarily, but give how poorly they ran the interview I'm surprised they used up time for this. The only reason I returned a few days later is because I wanted to see what their whiteboard question was, as that's the area I want to practice the most. The question didn't involve any coding, but more of a "how would you do this?" scenario. Overall it was a decent question, although the team's attempts to be funny came off as weird. The company did not come off well at all, and I can imagine it would bother me a lot more if I actually wanted to work in this industry. As it is, the company seems to ride off of a programmer's passion while underpaying them.

The process for me went like this: 1. Recruiter Call 2. Hiring Manager Call 3. Take Home HackerRank 4. 3 Panel Interviews back to back (1 hour each with a 30 minute break) A. Interview reviewing the HackerRank questions B. Subject Matter C. Culture fit The recruiting call was really straight forward, basically just told me what the interview process was like, and let me ask questions. The call with the hiring manager was a pleasure, we mostly just talked through my past experiences from my resume. The coding test seemed really fair, You got 2 hours to do it, and then the first panel interview was going through the answers, answering follow up questions, and walking though your thought process. There was no stressful live coding at all. HackerRank questions were a mix of coding and multiple choice, nothing beyond like a medium difficulty, but definitely focused towards game development. Subject matter interview is obviously going to depend on what you're interviewing for, but mine was basically walking through a variety of problems and how you might tackle them (no live coding here either). They were definitely testing my knowledge, but it felt more like a collaboration on how to handle different scenarios than a bunch of 'gotcha' questions I feel some places ask. The culture fit interview was with a producer and designer, and was mostly about you interact and take part in a team. Overall it was a great experience. The only negative I have is that the process took awhile. After the HackerRank, the next interview wasn't scheduled till almost a month later, but the recruiter was always responsive when I asked for an update.

went through like 8 interviews just to be told they already went with someone else. The Recruiter was amazing but the actual interviews themselves didnt seem interested or cared even if you do and show your willingness to be taught.
