      Colloquio per Software Developer

      Candidatura

Ho presentato la mia candidatura tramite un selezionatore. La procedura ha richiesto 3 settimane. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso Booking.com (Amsterdam) nel mese di giu 2016

      Colloquio

The interview process consisted in three steps. The first was an online test in hackerrank.com. The test were four problems to solve in any language I like. I selected Scala. These excercises were not dificult but I lose lot of precious time dealing with the input-ouput because I rarelly use that in my routine work. I didn't finish all the excercises completelly because two of them didn't pass all the test cases. The second was a call interview with two booking software developers using a web notepad in which they could see what I was writing. They proposed an excercise of grouping words from a list parameter with some additions. Nothing much complicated. After that they asked me what happens if the parameter was an iterable instead of a list and I cannot convert it to a list in my code, and what was the impact in my solution. Finally, passing the previous tests, I was invited to go to Amsterdam to a face to face interview. In Amsterdam I had three face to face interviews, two technical and one about talk from my job experience. The technical interviews were one about model designing and other about algorithms. The questions level was between moderate and hard for my point of view. After that they told me that in two weeks would have an offer for me. They didn't contact me from that. After one month I wrote to my recruiter but he didn't reply. I wrote again after two months but also without answer. I don't know if I didn't pass the selection process and what was my failures because they never gave me the final answer.

      Domanda 1

The most difficult answer was the design face to face interview. The problem was be able to create policies about how to charge to the customer. For example charge the 10% 2 weeks before, then the next 40% one week before and so on. In first it seems to be easy but while I was thinking in the situation they show me some complex scenarios.

      Colloquio

I recently interviewed with Booking.com for a software engineer role. The process was well-organized and took about 3–4 weeks. It started with an online assessment on HackerRank with a couple of LeetCode medium problems. That was followed by a technical screen where I did live coding and discussed basic algorithms. The final round was a full day of back-to-back sessions: algorithmic coding, system design (something like designing a hotel availability checker), a behavioral round using STAR questions, and a chat with a manager about company values. The interviewers were professional and friendly, and the problems felt relevant to Booking's actual business. On the downside, some coding rounds felt repetitive, and I didn't get much feedback after being rejected. Overall, it was a fair but challenging process. My advice: practice medium-level array and hash map problems, review basic system design, and have solid STAR stories ready. I'd rate it 4 out of 5 stars and would recommend it to other engineers.

Design a hotel search and availability system that returns available rooms for a given date range and can handle high traffic.

The whole process is composed of about 5 stages. Initial interview, then technical interview, followed by a “ownership” interview, then by a team-fit check interview. The initial interview is done by recruiters not based in the Netherlands (at least my experience) and felt as if the role had already been filled by the time I took it. Was answered with a “I’m doing good, hope you are doing good too. So this interview…” to “Hi, nice to meet you! How are you?”. It simply felt as if they didn’t want to be there and there was 0 engagement.
