The hiring process looks like this:
An initial application review (complete)
A submission of your views on strategy in this role (this stage)
A psychometric assessment
A broad initial interview
In-depth interviews with team members from technical and sales backgrounds
An interview with me
Further rounds of interviews, potentially culminating to the CEO
This role works directly with me. We will work together and hand-in-hand with sales, product engineering, commercial engineering, marketing and product management at a high pace to develop our market footprint while making our customers successful on a broad range of IoT designs. It is an intense and exciting team to be on, with high expectations on technical and business skills. To win this role you need to convince me that you have the aptitude and motivation to be successful under pressure with many moving parts internally and externally. You will need to show a strong aptitude at developing IoT system architectures, understanding new technology across a large spectrum of domains, and the ability to drive both solutions architecture and delivery engineering.
For this next stage, I would ask you to write a short but incisive essay of your vision for this role, and why you're an exceptional candidate to consider. Here are topics you should consider:
What are the key things to get right in IoT?
Where are people falling short with embedded products right now?
Where can Canonical make a difference?
What role could Ubuntu, Snaps and Ubuntu Core play?
How would you discover what our customers need and what should we offer to them
How do you imagine your role in this picture?
What makes you an exceptional candidate? Can you share an exceptional project of yours during your studies or from your early career?
Think of this as a prepared statement that you are making at the start of an interview. In reading your submission I will assess:
Your understanding of Linux OS architecture fundamentals, from hardware, bootloaders and firmware to applications and cloud services
Your experience with Docker/OCI containers, orchestration or device management
Your basic understanding of security technologies
Your understanding of networking and networking protocols
Your understanding of the IoT space and embedded development practices
I am interested in your technical, organisational, commercial and competitive perspectives.
Your statement could be a 'mission statement' for your leadership of this work at Canonical, or it could be a product pitch for the ways in which Canonical should address customer needs in this regard, or it could be an outline of key areas of opportunity. This role is ultimately about shaping the way we are perceived and the directions we take, so I will read it through the eyes of a potential customer or colleague looking to be convinced.
There's no need to spend excessive time on your statement, an hour or two should suffice.
To avoid bias I have set the system to keep your identity confidential when I review your submission, please don't include your name in the PDF.
Thank you, and I look forward to reading your submission.
