I was referred by an employee. I passed an HR screen, a hiring manager interview, a group interview and was asked to provide written answers to some technical questions for one of the jobs. A couple of weeks later I was interviewed by a different hiring manager for a different job and received a spoken offer on the spot. The HR contact phoned me to confirm it the next day, contingent on the usual drug screen and background check. I was told I was needed urgently and given a start date that would have required me to resign from my prior job before the contingencies on the offer were lifted, and also to leave my prior company before an impending bonus was paid. I negotiated 2 extra weeks and more money to cover this, and was asked to agree to the new terms in writing immediately by responding to a text drafted by the HR contact. The formal offer letter arrived days later than promised and the new items we’d agreed were absent. The HR contact said he could not get them approved, but he never communicated that to me. The hiring manager was out of office and unreachable. I accepted the offer despite this huge red flag because I wanted the job for other reasons. When I showed up for work, I was assigned to a manager different from the one named in my offer letter, whom I’d never spoken to before, and he turned out to be just a really difficult personality.
