Pretty easy, just ask the most common interview questions. Got hired on the spot. It's pretty easy to just lie about your sports experience if you are only going to be a cashier, but shoes and sports departments are harder to get into. I rarely played sports in high school and still got the job. They do ask if you play/ played sports.
