Initial Recruiter Screen: 30 min phone call to share background and learn more about the role
This was pretty straightforward. The recruiter had reached out to me, and gave me info about the role, team, etc.
Round 2: 30 min case interview + 30 min SQL code
I echo sentiments across Glassdoor re the data scientist interview. This was an awful experience. They are not here to get to know you, they are here to weed you out. They give you some prep materials before the interview that stress how important communication is in the interview, but both of these interviewers were like robots. They did nothing to make me feel comfortable or to make Doordash seem like an appealing place to work as they seem to take for a given that everyone would want to work there. I almost didn't take the interview after reading everything on Glassdoor about the data scientist interview process.
The case interview part was pretty standard, they're looking for you to talk about the metrics for Doordash's business. The interviewer didn't say much and was writing down my answers. It was difficult to make it conversational with this person, but I think they are trained to behave this way in interviews. I normally get very energized during case question interviews, but in the absence of a welcoming environment or much response to what I was saying except an occasional nod, it was difficult to think clearly.
For the SQL part of the interview, the SQL code has to be perfect, so they will harp on syntax issues until you find them. You also have to code very fast with multiple CTEs on a pseudo dataset based on Doordash's business without being able to run anything. It's nothing like coding in the real world, which is really frustrating. I got a bit flustered with the time pressure and having someone sit there silently with their camera off watching me. It is not a welcoming environment at all. I think it says a lot about their culture if this is the way that they interview. I had 3 questions, but I think there's 4 total if you're fast enough.
There was a definite lack of genuineness from both interviewers. Even in my questions to them, I got very stock answers to my questions so it was difficult to really get a sense of what it's like working there.

Domanda 1
SQL questions that cover aggregations, ratio, lag, growth, etc. Have to write multiple CTEs to answer question.
Case interview about a new product/service for Doordash's business.

Colloquio
1. First round of interview was 30 min SQL (very easy) + a case study
2. Second round had 3 case studies and one cross functional interview
Interviewers were kind. 2 of the case studies were straight forward, one was very ambiguous.

Domanda 1
experimentation, metrics, diagnosis, LTV, Opportunity sizing in an ambiguous setting were you can't run experiment and you have to make a lot of assumptions to navigate through the ambiguity.

I applied online and after about a week, I received an email from the recruiter with a 15-question questionnaire. The next day, they scheduled a 1-hour interview consisting of a 30-minute case study and 30-minute SQL round.
I spent significant time preparing and felt the interview went well. However, I received a rejection within 15 minutes after the interview ended.
Honestly, the process felt discouraging. It almost seemed like the interview was conducted more for internal interviewer training than genuine hiring consideration.
If you're interviewing there, I’d suggest treating it mainly as practice and interview experience rather than getting overly invested in the outcome.
