After sending in my resume, cover letter, and portfolio link, I was contacted for an initial phone interview with an HR/recruiting person.
After that, I moved on to a phone interview with the hiring manager. That went well, and then I was giving a 'design challenge' to complete and present. The 'design challenge' was very challenging in both the content and what was being asked. Even though they said it should only take 4 hours, there was no way to present anything even halfway decent in that amount of time. It took me 2 days to get something put together to present. I shared it with some of my UX friends for feedback, and they all told me it looked great, and that I should think about putting it in my portfolio. So I felt pretty good about presenting my work.
At the 'design challenge' presentation interview there were 2 team members present. Neither had taken the time to look at my portfolio, or the design challenge presentation that I had submitted before the meeting. As I went through the processes and screens, the 2 interviewees said little, and gave no position feedback, but did mention a small detail that I hadn't thought of yet, which seemed completely non conducive. They were fairly cold and not particularly friendly, and as the meeting went on, I started to get the feeling that I might not want to work with a team of people like this. I think one of the interviewees may have sensed that they weren't projecting a very positive energy, and said, 'We have fun. I mean, we eat lunch together every day.'
I asked if I could get some feedback on my work for the design challenge, and they said that they would send an email with feedback, which I appreciated, considering the effort I put into it. The interview ended, and so I waited to hear back from someone. And waited. And waited.
After over a week, I received an auto-response email saying that I was not selected for the position. No personal email from anyone I interviewed with. No feedback on my work for the design challenge.
I'm not upset that I wasn't asked to join the team, as I had already decided that it wasn't a team I wanted to be on. I'm sure for some, this would be a good fit. But I like to be around people with a sense of humor and a positive energy.
