      Colloquio per Senior Software Engineer

      11 lug 2020
      Dipendente anonimo
      Detroit, MI
      Offerta accettata
      Esperienza positiva
      Colloquio difficile

      Candidatura

Ho presentato la mia candidatura online. La procedura ha richiesto 2 settimane. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso Dynatrace (Detroit, MI) nel mese di set 2019

      Colloquio

Phase 1 was a technical phone screen interview with two team leads asking a variety of platform and programming knowledge questions, in may case particularly focused on Java, the JVM, and cloud technologies. There was less an emphasis on getting to as many questions as possible and more on the dialogues surrounding some of them, e.g. a question about encapsulation led to discussion of why encapsulation is important and how it affects software design approaches. The goal of this interview was to gauge my knowledge of fundamentals and get a feel for my level of competency to determine if it would be appropriate to move on to phase 2. Phase 2 was a take home assignment sent by email with guidance for completion but no enforced restrictions. The assignment involved working with and improving an existing application, which I found compelling as it reflects the kind of day-to-day experiences of software engineers - we tend to spend much more time in other people's code than we do writing our own new code. By "no enforced restrictions" I mean that it was suggested that one spend ~8 hours on the assignment, but there was nothing monitoring the time spent and no rule about spending less or more time on it. I liked that freedom to put as much as I wanted into the assignment, knowing that I could benefit from going above and beyond if I so chose. The actual interview was a presentation of my project, in whatever manner I saw fit, to a group of engineers, team leads, and directors. The presentation allowed for lots of back-and-forth in which attendees would probe into why I made certain decisions and what thought process went into the direction and organization of my project. At the conclusion of the presentation, I was provided feedback by every attendee. After that, I had a couple of one-on-one interviews with a senior team lead and a director, both of which focused more on soft skills like development methodology, team dynamics, and how I approach my work and relationships.

      Domanda 1

What is the value of object-oriented programming? In what circumstances could it not be the best choice?

Proved not really serious and a simply a waste of time. I went through the entire recruitment process, having first the recruiter and then the hiring manager confirm that the role was fully remote only to be rejected at the end because of my remote location and despite very good feedback. The entire process took roughly a month. First there were three "standard" steps: * short call with the recruiter * 1h meeting with the hiring manager + team captain (an engineer from the team I was applying to). This included some light technical questions * 2h technical meeting with two engineers from the team. Included a live coding portion and then questions/discussion. We finished early and I got to ask a good amount of questions from my side At this point, according to what I've been told in the beginning, they should've come back with the decision, but instead I was only told that the feedback from the technical round was very positive and that a director from Gdansk wants to meet me for an additional 1h. This final meeting only lasted 20-30 minutes and was mainly about how often and for how long I can come to the office in Gdansk. The initial proposal was every month for a few days, to which I was reluctant as I live a few hundred kilometers away. I was then asked if every 3 months would work and I had no issues with that. I also said I'd be open to come to any in-person all-team meetings, company events etc. Despite all that, previous assurances about role being remote and the fact that the team is spread across at least three offices I got a rejection call from the recruiter a few days later saying that the location was the main reason for not extending an offer.

Recuriter interview to talk about motivation and salary expectations, etc — The HR person was kind and helpful. Then an interview with the hiring manager to talk about the past experience and job expectations. This to be followed by a technical interview where you have to live-code a real usecase similar to the one occuring in the company. I later received an email after the hiring manager interview that they wont continue because the hiring manager didn’t “feel” I was senior enough.
