Shortlisted applications are requested to complete a coding challenge: implement some spreadsheet-related function as a stand-alone program. Unlike other coding challenges, there's an expectation for some requirements not specified in the instructions. Not setting expectations clearly from the beginning puts the burden of figuring out what they are looking for on the candidate, which is unfair. This could also indicate a place with a poor culture of open communication.
