I was sent an email within 12 hours of applying the night prior to meet for an interview. As we were in the beginning of our “shelter in place” orders, I was a bit concerned about traveling to NYC for the interview but sought clarification to understand where we would meet up. Then I was informed it would be a webex/zoom interview + given a time.
I “showed up” for my interview at least five minutes early and was met with a blocked off video of the interviewer. He was 10 minutes late. But I thought - “these are hard times, maybe he’s struggling to keep his day on track, etc.”
Throughout the entire interview, he kept looking off to the distance + muting himself. He was clearly working from home - which was fine, except for the fact that I clearly had only about twenty five percent of his attention - and he was talking to whomever was off screen repeatedly.
It was incredibly unprofessional. I had to constantly wait for him to unmute himself before he could ask a question. He asked me nothing other than to run through my resume; nothing about customer service, nothing about why I was looking for the job in the first place, nothing about the company. It seemed as though he was completely disengaged.
Having been on the other side of an interview before, I maybe have a keener understanding than most when it comes to some best practices. I can honestly say this was the worst interview experience I have ever had.
