      I don't think Genentech is truly interested in hiring outside candidates. The whole process seems skewed toward shuffling people around internally (people are only in their roles 18-24 months before moving). I've been jerked around at this company with multiple roles now, and it honestly is getting old and the process reflects poorly on them as an organization. It seems like HR sends hiring manager some external candidates to evaluate so they can check a box and say they considered outside hires...but they never really consider you. The feedback I got (when I even got feedback at all) was that I didn't have some very specific experience that you could only have if you worked there. So why did you even interview me in the first place? The process varies WIDELY from team to team. With one role, it was straight to an in-person one-on-one with the hiring manager. With another role, it was 2 phone calls with the hiring manager, followed by a full day in-person with people who clearly didn't want to be bothered speaking with me. And another role was a call with the hiring manager, a full day of in person interviews, followed by a second day of in person interviews. Some interviews were highly structured where the people clearly had a question list, and others were more of meandering conversations. Some went the full time, others wrapped up in only half the allotted time. Unless you know someone who can give you the inside scoop, good luck getting much information on the role, how the department is structured, or what they expect from candidates. There is an endless soup of acronyms thrown at you, which they expect you to intuit. And some snarky interviewers will throw ridiculous questions at you that you couldn't possibly answer well if you didn't already work there and know the company's approaches and systems. I even got a nasty question about "how would you respond to the perception that your experience is limited because it is only in XXX"--implying that my experience was inferior to other candidates. Again--WHY DID YOU INTERVIEW ME THEN? And what a rude, belittling thing to say!!! With most of the roles, there was little if any feedback. The one time I got useful feedback, I think it's because the hiring manager actually cared and we had connected well throughout the process. In one situation, HR said that based on my phone screen they wanted to bring me in for an interview....and then after weeks of not getting a reply back from them I got a rejection letter. How do you go from "we want to bring you in" to "rejection" with no explanation and just a generic form letter rejection? Unprofessional. Honestly, the whole process has really soured my impression of this company. I think it's difficult to get into the company unless you get in on the ground floor in an entry level role, and/or unless you know someone who works there. Many of the people seem reasonably smart, but no smarter than those at one of the many other healthcare companies in the Bay Area. It seems like employees like to protect their turf and are highly critical of other candidates who match or surpass their intellect, nitpicking on everything they can find. You can always find a reason not to hire someone if you try hard enough. It also seems like the employees at Genentech jealously guard their cushy jobs (I've heard people only work 20-30hrs/wk at most), and aren't interested in dynamically moving a company forward. Good riddance.

Our interview process is constantly evolving, as we identify and implement ways to create a positive candidate experience. Many of our managers go through competency based, behavioral interview training in order to enhance their skills. We’re sorry you did not feel there was a consistent practice translated with all of the managers you interacted with. Your feedback has been noted and escalated accordingly.       I came into the interview process with Genentech genuinely excited about the opportunity, especially given the company’s reputation for innovation and patient-centered work. My initial video interview was positive and engaging, and I was given a clear timeline for next steps, which initially made me feel valued and aligned with Genentech’s values. However, my experience took a significant turn during the interview with the hiring manager. It quickly became apparent that the manager was not familiar with my background and made several assumptions that were both inaccurate and dismissive. They explicitly stated that I had “far less experience” than other candidates, despite the recruiter’s confidence in my qualifications. While I appreciate transparency, this feedback was delivered in a way that felt passive-aggressive, especially with the manager’s comment that I should feel “proud” to have made it this far. This, combined with their use of casual language, including cursing, felt unprofessional and left me questioning the fit. In addition, only one question in the conversation was directly related to the responsibilities of the role, and it was at a junior level that didn’t match my experience or skills. This approach made it difficult to feel that my expertise or career accomplishments were valued. Following the hiring manager interview, I took the initiative to discuss salary expectations with the recruiter, aiming to ensure transparency. Although this was handled professionally, there was some hesitation in providing a range, which would have been helpful to discuss earlier in the process. After a thorough and professional panel interview, I was told I’d receive updates regarding next steps soon. However, weeks passed without communication, and I had to repeatedly reach out to the recruiter to get status updates. The extended silence created unnecessary stress, particularly as I was weighing other offers. Genentech’s mission is admirable, and its brand is well-regarded, but the hiring process fell short in a few key areas. Candidates would benefit greatly from interviewers who come prepared, avoid presumptions, and focus on meaningful, role-relevant questions. Consistent follow-up and transparency would also align better with Genentech’s values and improve the candidate experience overall.

      The interview consisted of a phone screen by the recruiter, followed by a phone screen by the hiring manager. The final interview was in person where I met with the hiring manager and three other colleagues in 1:1 interviews that I might be working with.
