The interview process stages were clearly defined in their handbook, and it stays true to what's described in the handbook.
After submitting my online application, I received an email from the hiring manager, that contains some followup technical questions. The technical questions touched on optimisation relating to Rails.
Then, a screening call is scheduled with the recruiter, and it was a quick 30minute call with very basic questions like why do you want to work in GitLab, have you written tests before, why are you leaving your job etc.
The 3rd stage is a technical interview. I was given access to a merge request, and I had to review and comment on the merge request. During the technical interview, the interviewer (not the hiring manager) is very pleasant to talk to. I felt that I was mainly assessed on my technical knowledge and how I normally would normally write code.
The next stage is a video interview with the hiring manager, which also includes technical questions. The interview was pleasant.
At each stage of the process, it was made clear to me which stage I'm at, and what would happen next if I pass through to the next stage.
The feedback given is also detailed and personalised.

Four interviews in total: - 40 minute screening call - 90 minute technical interview - 60 minute behavioural interview with hiring manager - 60 minute behavioural interview with HM's manager All of the interviews went well, and I had some great positive feedback along the way. The last interviewer indicated they would make a decision about next steps within 2 days. It has now been four weeks. I have followed up with the recruiter and have heard nothing. It seems like I've been unsuccessful - it happens! But all it'd take is one tiny email response from the recruiter to let me know and provide closure. Throughout the process each of the interviewers talked about GitLab's values, and these values are why I was interested in interviewing here. Sadly, despite pushing them so hard, it seems like they don't abide by their 'transparency' value.

I had a very poor interview experience overall. Initial phone interview to discuss my experience and the role. Was given the salary range, that seemed to be above market.
After 5 rounds of interviews and 3 weeks, I was ghosted. No reply to follow ups or responses to emails.
What makes it even more potent is that there is a very high expectation that candidates study the company values (CREDIT) and have detailed knowledge of the handbook and process.
In my case the handbook process was not followed and in my opinion ghosting candidates is highly unprofessional. I am very disappointed in how the company conducted the process.
