The process began with a portfolio review over the phone, in which a designer gave me a call and asked me about several of the projects on my portfolio and the design processes that went into them. It was a very straightforward discussion with no curveballs or anything of that ilk. After passing that phase, the next step was a "design exercise" for which I was given the choice between several different design problems to solve. I chose one and submitted my response, which was evidently good enough to move on to the next phase. Having passed the design exercise, I was flown out to Mountain View for an on-site interview. The primary component of this was a 1-hour presentation to a panel of Google designers, which consisted of my design exercise solution as well as additional details about some of my portfolio projects. Following the presentation, I had individual interviews with each of those designers. While I felt that all the interviews had gone quite smoothly, about a week later I unfortunately received a call stating that my application had been rejected by the "hiring committee". While I was really disappointed, the process itself wasn't bad, and it certainly was better organized than any other company I interviewed at.
