      Colloquio

      The interview process was well organized-- communication and scheduling was quick and straightforward. I had two interviews with leasing managers, the last one was with the person I would report directly to. I had such a positive experience in my first interview. I really liked the leasing manager's friendly deameanor. My second interview started off really well, although this leasing manager was more reserved in his demeanor he was still personable. Everything seemed to be going great until I asked a question about racism in the workplace. I read a Glassdoor review by a former employee that directly spoke out about this issue and I thought it was a fair question to ask during an interview with the person I would report to. Unfortunately, his response was not what I anticipated and I knew I was not going to be moving forward from there. I was hoping for him to respond professionally by speaking to company policies on that type of behavior, what diversity and inclusion looks like at Gotham and what their committment is to those values. Again, unfortunately, he seemed visibly flustered and taken aback by the question, spoke to things other than what I mentioned above, and invalidated that person's experience. For me that was extra cause for concern as someone whose experienced racism in the workplace. However, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and assumed he was just nervous, but realistically it's a fair question that shouldn't elicit that kind of response from someone at his level. I am thankful to the person who shared their experience. I know firsthand how it feels experience racism, what it takes to speak up, and the consequences of doing so.
