Hello, I'm a co-founder at Gruntwork and the one who personally authored the boilerplate email that you received when we declined to move forward with your application, so I appreciate the feedback. If it helps, here's some history behind the email you received.
Historically, we received so many applications that we didn't send any update when we declined to proceed with a candidate. We later got the feedback that radio silence was frustrating for candidates and that they would rather know where they stood. So we invested time in creating a process to notify people after we reviewed their application.
Our applicant tracking system, Workable, doesn't support specifying a reason for declining a candidate, so I authored a generic email that transparently listed the specific reasons why we typically decline candidates. We sent that email to probably 15 candidates -- including you! -- but then I received internal feedback from our team that while listing the possible reasons for declining a candidate was intended to be helpful, some people felt it sent the wrong message.
So even before reading this review, we updated our decline email merely to inform someone that we have declined them, but not to offer any insight as to why.
Thanks again for the feedback. It's always appreciated.
