After submitting a digital application and completing a phone interview, I was invited to an in-person interview. I was greeted at the door when I arrived and given a quick tour. Then, I was asked to fill out a paper application, which had questions about my salary history, which made me uncomfortable, but I assumed it was legal. After speaking with a lawyer later in the day, I learned that the question is indeed illegal in Illinois. I emailed the company email that I had and raised my concern and asked if they were aware of this issue (I like to extend grace). I received a reply that thanked me for raising the concern and that they would forward it to HR. However, no apology was included, so I replied that I was withdrawing my application and reporting the incident. Then, the person who interviewed me sent me a long email detailing how I should have spoken up earlier, which completely redirects the blame to me and ignores the mistake he made. I think it could have been an honest mistake given that Mathnasium has locations outside of Illinois, but it is how the situation was handled that is deeply disturbing.
