Ok I promised myself that as soon as my hiring process was over that I would share it because when I was searching for info there wasn't much to go on. It is a very long process and it gets nerve racking at times not knowing what to expect.
I applied in August 2015 and received a call from the department assistant in December 2015. The interview was scheduled for a week after the initial phone call. My interview, which I believe was a new approach, was a round robin style interview. About 40 candidates came in (they needed to fill multiple positions) and each candidate was taken off to a room to interview with 2 dept staff. Interview was normal and basically went over your resume. If they liked you then you were asked to do a writing test. If you passed that then you waited for a second interview with the department heads. A week later I received a phone call stating that they would like to bring me in for another round of interviews with the people that I would work directly for, by this time we were into January. Here, I met with three people and the interview questions were similar to the first 2 rounds except they asked my current salary and left a lot more time for me to ask questions. By the end of the week I received a call stating that they wanted to hire me. During that call they requested that I immediately email them an updated resume and a list of references. They started calling references that day. In February, 3 weeks after I was told that they wanted to hire me,I got a call from HR Stating that everything had been approved by the dept and forwarded to HR. HR emailed be a large packet that I had to fill out and return by the end of the week. The packet was mostly residence and work history. I spent another week correcting the packet because they are so particular about exact dates and titles ect. Three weeks later I got a call from the HR processing center to come in for processing ( at this point we are at March 1st.) The processing appointment was on March 7th and I had to bring all my original personal documents in along with the final work history packet that I had submitted to HR, and a $68 money order. Processing takes all day and it is done at 180 Livingston st. They review all of your paperwork, make corrections, complete your w2s along with a bunch more documents, take your photo, and set you up for your start date and orientation. After this part is when you give your current job your notice and Mta is flexible with your start date within reason (I asked for 3 weeks instead of 2 so that I could give my job notice and take off a week before starting since I won't get any time off for a year). This position didn't require a physical or drug test but many positions do such as drivers, conductors, n ppl who work with equipment.
The analyst series pay is note worthy. Regardless if you qualify for top pay in the analyst series based on education and experience, they look at what level u qualify for verses 15% more than your current salary and then they go with the lower of the two. I will start in April and the first week will be mostly orientations and benefit info sessions and whatnot. In closing, the entire process took 8 months from application to end. From interview to hire date was 4 months and the time for call stating they wanted me to start date was 3 months! Overall everyone in the process was great I reccomend being your self but come prepared and know what you are talking about and figure out how your experience can relate to the position that you are applying for.
Last note, I also interviewed several months prior for another dept and it was not an all day event. They had a board of three people and each person asked situational and give an example type of questions. They never bothered to tell me if I got the job and never returned my emails or calls.
