      Colloquio per QA Engineer

      17 ott 2018

      Candidatura

Ho presentato la mia candidatura tramite un selezionatore. La procedura ha richiesto 3 settimane. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso Paylocity nel mese di set 2018

      Colloquio

I happened to get an email from Paylocity one day. I was not actively looking at the time and I get recruiter emails all the time and usually delete them, but this one was different. They were offering a Remote position and their short and sweet pitch hooked me, and so I thought I would just reply to see what they were all about. Then next day, after a enthusiastic chat with the recruiter, Chelsey, she sent over at QA Challenge to complete. It is a QA skills and critical thinking exercise and also a coding challenge. The "challenge" is the basic things you would do in a QAE position. I think it helps them assess if you are actually capable to do the work, so during the interview they can get to know you better. They have a set time window for interviews every week. I knew I wasn't going to finish the challenge by that first available date. Chelsey reassured me it was no problem and we scheduled for the following week. The interview itself was about 90 minute video conference with a Lead and a Senior QA. Both were really down to earth. We talked about QA process, bugs, SQL and other tools. We also walked through the code. In the end, they just really want to know how you think and how you make decisions and solve problems. It ended up feeling like a good conversation rather than an interview since we were all answering questions back and forth. I learned about their project teams and how they work when they are all remote. After the interview, Chelsey followed up pretty quickly. The next interview was with the director. The phone call with the director was to give more background on Paylocity as a company and how the IT department works. She encouraged me to ask as many questions as I had, as they are very transparent. It was then I had the epiphany that they interview their QA Engineers that the same way they interview their Software Developers. She confirmed that. So, if you want to know more about the interview process, you can check out those reviews on Glassdoor as well. Over all, this has been, hands-down, the best interview process I've been through. The recruiter, Chelsey, was there every step of the way. Everyone I talked to was friendly, down to earth, and passionate, which said a lot to me about their company culture. My advice: 1. Really do your best in the QA challenge, don't just do the minimum. You can ask for clarifications if something is not clear. 2. Being self aware of your strengths and weaknesses is a good thing, so be open and honest about your skill set. 3. Ask a lot of questions!

They asked about QA background, SQL joins, JMETER experience, API experience, and code walk through (be prepared to answer how or why you you did something in the code).

The interview process in Paylocity is excellent. The first step is technical screening with one of the recruiters from Patlocity, and if it goes well, you will receive QA Challenge, which you need to finish before your group interview. The second step is a group interview. Lead QA and Senior QA interviewed me. They want to know more about your background and to walk them through your QA challenge.

The first interview is over the phone with their Recruiter, whom does work for Paylocity ( not outside vendor), it's the basic screening type interview. If you move on, they will give you a an assignment that needs to be completed 24 prior to the group interview and they use it as talking points for that interview. The assignment is a basic test site, and they want you to write up testcases, any bugs you find and then a automate the testing of the site with whatever tool, language or framework you want. They also give you a list of various questions from the team in general around quality assurance and testing. The actual group technical interview is a few hours of going over the assignment. They will also present you with some code samples to review and describe what they are doing. If that goes well, then the Recruiter will let you know and one last interview part, that is not really an interview more of an informational session with a the head of the department you'll be working for and if all goes well they will send you an offer.

I was approached by their TA person on LinkedIn. Had a phone screen where we discussed about my skills, company culture etc. I was given a QA challenge which I completed by creating my own test framework, writing tests etc. It was a good challenge and they tell you to go easy on it but you have to work on it hard and make sure it works. Then I had video interview with two of their QA one us senior and one us lead aa. interview lasted about 1.5hrs where we discussed my skills and their team dynamics for 1hr. next half hour we went through my code challenge. Interviewers literally wowed at some areas of my challenge solution. they were friendly and talked very nice and almost made me feel that I landed this job. However, their TA sent me email to reconnect. At this point I was sure I hit the job. She then called me and said I needed to brush up on some skills that interviewees actually liked. They are responsive and transparent about the process but they didnt really help me understand why I wasn't a good fit. she gave me reasons when I asked but she said I lack few skills that they require which were my strongest skills (have references that back me up on that). so overall process was good but their decision is very confusing that is all. didnt get what they are really expecting.
