      Colloquio

In my entire professional career, I’ve never experienced a hiring process as unprofessional and outright disrespectful as Paylocity’s. My experience with their process began over two months ago. It started with a series of last-minute, no-explanation cancellations for the initial phone screen with the recruiter. After the third cancellation, I decided it wasn’t worth the effort to pursue, left a previous review on Glassdoor about the experience and moved on. Miraculously, after the negative review, the recruiter reached back out to confirm an intro call. Against my better judgement at the time, I rescheduled. The next weeks were filled with several other interviews. The final round was a 4-hour remote session with 5 employees in a variety of roles. I’d been asked to prepare a deck to discuss a feature I’d delivered (details around definition, process, launch, etc.). The interviews seemed to go well. The response from the group was overall positive. The next day, I received a call from the recruiter saying everyone on the team had overwhelmingly positive feedback on my interviews and were impressed with the information I’d presented. She communicated that they were working to put together the official offer and the details of that offer they were planning to extend. This was on Wednesday. She told me she’d work on getting the necessary approvals and would get back to me ASAP. She expressed confidence in getting these based on the team’s feedback and my experience level. By halfway through the following day, I still hadn’t heard back. I emailed the recruiter and then called her. She finally returned an email late in the afternoon saying someone was unavailable for the approval, but she’d be in touch the next day. Friday morning I get an ambiguously-worded email about Paylocity being “unfortunately unable to extend an offer at this time.” At this point, it is unclear whether the offer needs some modifications to the details for approval or if it is being outright retracted. I ask the recruiter directly, receive another ambiguous response about her “meeting with the leadership” the following Tuesday morning to get more information and she will connect with me after. When we connect after the meeting, she informs me that a SVP didn’t like something about me on paper and refused to approve the offer. No negotiation, no conversation with me and, despite what I was told was a unanimous vote to hire me from the folks I interviewed with, they will not be extending an offer. They’re sorry, but I’m told I should rest assured that they’re learning about and improving their offer process as a result - my consolation prize. To be honest, it seems I dodged a bullet with Paylocity. This company’s values and culture are clearly a facade. If a SVP chooses to ignore an entire group’s recommendation to hire a candidate based on something he doesn’t like about a candidate on paper, there are some very serious systemic issues within the organization. I didn’t even get a clear answer as to what it was he didn’t approve of about me. I can’t help but wonder what his bias is. For those considering Paylocity as an potential employer, be advised — all the effort and necessary qualifications don’t guarantee you an offer...even when one is verbally extended to you. Don’t waste your time and energy on a company with such egregious disrespect and lack of empathy for candidates.

Thank you for taking the time to share detailed feedback about your interview experience. It sounds like it was less than ideal, which is unacceptable on our part. We pride ourselves on providing candidates with an excellent experience from their first touch point with a recruiter to their final interview feedback and we clearly did not meet or exceed your expectations in this instance. I sincerely apologize for the miscommunication and rescheduling. We will work to address the issues you pointed out to ensure it does not happen again. In the meantime, if you’d like to speak more in depth about this I would be happy to talk.

I had 3 interviews over a 3 week period and received an offer shortly after my final interview. I had a great experience - everyone I spoke to was very professional and engaging. Mostly behavioral interview questions.

The first round was a typical product behavior interview with a few different managers. Then, they had a case study like interview as well as conversations with tech leads. Everyone I spoke with seemed nice and intelligent. They all also liked their jobs.

Recruiter emailed, and then scheduled a call. On the call, this recruiter spoke very fast, said that the job was advertised as remote, but it really wasn't because of a couple months of training that had to be completed onsite. The training, they explained, related to the fact that the position was really an associate PO role, not a standard PO role as advertised. I'm not sure why they wasted their and my time. They didn't seem very interested from the beginning, and since that's the way they treat interviewees, I was happy to not move forward in the process.
