During the video chat interview, I asked two very basic questions. How many employees will this position supervise? What branches are currently hiring for this position? The interviewers would not answer either question. I don’t know how I’m expected to decide whether a job is right for me if I’m not given basic information like where I would be working and how many employees I’d be supervising. The interviewers were either very uninformed or very cagey about details, and neither option reflects well on the organization. I withdrew from consideration because it would be impossible for me to decide whether I was right for the job when I knew so little about the job itself.

For a supervisory position, I expected to be asked about how I would work with my team to mentor them and/or mediate any problems. But the questions were all based on library programs and partnerships. I don’t think they were getting a very good sense of how interviewers would actually perform in the job.

Invitation to the interview was emailed with an online scheduling tool. Initial interview with a panel and a second interview with the hiring supervisor and his/her manager. There are many questions to go over in a fairly short amount of time.

Interviewees are notified via phone. First interview consists of a 3 person panel. Second interview can vary from 2 people to 6, depending on how many positions are available, and which branch is hiring.
