Applied through contract agency, as all Tech Writers in the Raleigh-Durham area start as contractors. Recruiter phone screening squared away mutual interest and potential rate. Scheduled 30-minute interview with lead tech writer for Qualcomm the following week. Next step was to meet with Development team on-site, including same lead tech writer, one additional writer, QA person, and Software Director. Director informed me of immediate need, which was promising. Interview lasted 3 hours and went well. Received offer through contractor shortly after.
Accepted the offer, put in my two weeks with potential start date, waiting on final approval from Qualcomm. Final approval took longer than anticipated, and start date came and went. Contacted contractor two days after and was informed that open requisitions in the area were on hold indefinitely, leaving me jobless with little to go on.
Advise: continue to apply for and take interviews until you actually step foot in the office and begin working.
