I was asked to do a phone screen first. One of their lead devs called me right on time and we chatted for a bit about my past experiences. Then we did a code pairing exercise where we would trade off writing test cases and then made the test case pass. You can do this in any language. The pairing made this feel like any other code pairing session and it went really well. The problem wasn't tricky and did not require knowing any particular algorithm or data structure. Just have experience writing tests and choose the language you are most comfortable with.
After passing that I was handed off to the hiring manager of the specific team I was applying for. This person sent me a github repo with detailed instructions and design specs for an app I was to create. This app took me around 20 hours to complete. I put a lot of work into it, wrote tests, added some extra features, wrote documentation, explained my thought process about the architectural choices I made, etc. One week later I got a no-explanation rejection. I asked if they could give me any more specific feedback and have not yet gotten a reply.
I would think twice before doing this much work for an interview ever again.
It was a very good interview we had a nice conversation and honestly super good vibes. Super sweet interviewer and I highly recommend to apply here if you can because the overall environment is healthy.
