I applied through their website, and after 2 weeks I received an email saying I was selected for an interview, which turned out to be a one-way interview where I answered 4 or 5 general and timed questions. I made it through that, then 2 weeks later did a Skype interview with HR. The HR rep (who I could SEE, exhibited zero interest in my questions, my answers, etc.) but gave me a snotty answer when I asked how my qualifications compared with other candidates' skills. "You're speaking to me, aren't you?" I had doubts about joining this company after reading things about it online. If you want to be shocked, just read about the behavior of its co-founder, Tucker Max, who sounds like a real doozy. Yes, he's the guy who referred to his own baby in an interview as "something I made from my sperm." Classy.

First things first - thanks so much for your honesty. We value your honest feedback, and see it as an opportunity to look at our hiring process and possibly improve it. Here’s some context that will help you understand our process: we have over 1200 applicants per position that we open up. This means we are forced to turn away almost everyone that applies to work with us, and sadly, we almost certainly miss out on some great people who would be really amazing fits. This is unfortunate, but it’s a hard reality of having so many applicants. Given those facts, if you end up making it to an interview with us, you’ve already been past a big chunk of the competition. We can only interview about 10 percent of the candidates who apply. We don’t have an HR rep, everyone who interviews potential tribe members has an actual job, so I am not sure who you interviewed that you felt was giving you “snotty answers.” My guess is that this person was trying to make a joke, and this was lost in translation. Thanks again for your honesty!

The first interview is a video interview. They ask you 3 open ended generic interview questions but the answers don't really matter. Why do I say they don't matter? Well they give you a minute to answer the questions and in the directions it said it is more about giving a sense of your personality. It was supposed to help them decide if you fit their "culture". I'm not sure if that is code for race or sexual identity. It surely felt that way based on the return response.

Thank you for being honest in your review. It’s always refreshing when people tell us what they really think, even when they make unjustly offensive racial and discriminatory comments. Here are some facts that you might want to consider: 1. Our CEO is mixed race. His father was black and his mother white. Furthermore, there are several other people of different races in our Tribe. Maybe you missed their pictures, here try this page: https://bookinabox.com/about/ 2. You can't tell by pictures (or video), but we have several people of different sexual orientations (and genders). This makes your accusation of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation the most confusing to me. How does video help anyone discriminate in this way? Are you saying that gay people all talk the same? Or look the same? If so, that is highly offensive (and inaccurate, obviously). We invite you to reach out to our CEO and discuss your offensive comments directly with him. He would love to hear from you: jt@bookinabox.com.

Strange, old fashioned, power trippy interview process that keeps you guessing. They say they're hiring for "cultural fit" more than for skill set, and that they're a relationship company but there's no opportunity to create relationship. No human contact through the first several rounds. They've got thousands of applicants and the process seems to be geared toward gicing you hoops to jump at each round, then narrowing the field by means of pretty arbitrary disqualifiers. I made it through 5 rounds and was never asked a single question that suggested anyone had read my resume or previous responses. The last interview turned out to be only me asking the questions. Good strategy, in theory, but it would make sense to tell the candidate that at the front end of the session. I kept thinking they were going to take over after they gave me a chance to ask some things, so I didn't drill down. The last 2 rounds I made it through were with humans, but they definitely were suffering from interview fatigue. I felt almost apologetic for taking their time. They answered questions in a way that said "I've heard this a hundred times.

They give you a week to answer 4 questions that they say are designed to show how you create relationship. They tell you they want you to think on your feet, and not to script them. No feedback on what the rubric is or how you're disqualified or not.

Thanks for being honest and taking the time to type out this review. This sort of honest critique gives us a chance to get feedback and possibly improve the way we do hiring. You’re right about one thing - we have many, many skilled and capable individuals applying to every one of our career openings. Like you said, we have an average of 1200 applicants per posting. That’s more than most Fortune 500 companies get, and we’re nowhere near their size. Because of these constraints, we have to use some unconventional hiring practices, like one way video interviews and the “question interview.” We’ve found that they work very well in helping us find who would fit in our culture, though sadly, I am sure we miss some great people. We really like the “question interview” because as a culture we value insightful and original questions. Our CEO uses the “question interview” because he can get deep insights into a person based on what they ask him. We do not tell this to people for a reason: if they knew it was coming, they would “study the test” instead of actually showing us who they really are. Given the constraints we operate under, if you have any specific recommendations about how we can improve our hiring process, we would love to hear them. We are always looking to get better. You can email our CEO, JT at this email: jt@bookinabox.com. He would love to hear from you.
