      Colloquio

During my first interview, I told them what my salary requirements were. They were a little more than what I was currently earning because I’d be losing some great benefits by leaving what was my current job at the time, and I explained this to them. A slightly higher salary (around 5k) but with less benefits would balance out to a lateral move. I had two more interviews with them, and at the third and final interview they made me an offer on the spot: they offered me what I was currently earning. I felt like they’d wasted my time. I explained my requirements, and the reasons why, during my very first call with them. Not only that, but the health insurance options they were offering were outrageously expensive. I’d be earning a LOT less money working for them. I declined. They didn’t want to take “No” for an answer and continued to try to get me to accept, but I ended up taking an offer with another company shortly thereafter. I hoped this would’ve been a learning experience for them. Low-balling someone is a terrible way to begin a working relationship, and again, my time had been wasted. They are, ironically, in the education business — learning should be their forte. But I spoke with someone a little while later who’d experienced the same thing: told them his salary requirements up front, went through the process, only to be low-balled. Another reviewer here mentions working for them as a contractor at less than his normal rate. But nothing says “We don’t value you” like paying someone less than what they’ve asked for during the interview process. They’re frequently hiring developers, so I wonder if turnover is a problem for them.

Thank you for taking the time to interview with us. We enjoyed getting to know you during the interview process and were hopeful to have you join our team. We value and appreciate all of the feedback you provided on this review. This will allow us to make improvements as we evolve and grow as a company. Our intention is for everyone to have a positive experience with SofterWare from the moment their application is submitted to us, so I was sorry to hear you felt we “wasted your time”. Regarding your specific concern regarding salary, perhaps we need to do a better job explaining our goal of providing employees with a full compensation package that makes them feel valued, satisfied, and engaged. First, we know we’re competing to hire the best candidates, so we make sure our compensation is competitive with similar employment opportunities in our geographic location. Not only do we check what other companies are offering on a frequent basis, we also review our compensation with our staff to make sure we’re addressing their needs. We’ve made many changes based on both factors in recent years, and will continue to do so. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why we’ve been listed as one of the best places to work by Philly.com the last 7 years. In addition, our total compensation package is comprised of a variety of items, and a competitive base salary is just one component. We also offer quarterly bonus incentives, profit sharing, 401-K match, holiday and paid time off (PTO), health and dental insurance, wellness event reimbursement, parental leave, bereavement leave, professional development program, volunteer time off, charitable donation matching, and more. Lastly, compensation is an important part of any job, as well as an enjoyable work-life balance. We put an emphasis on this, which is why Philly.com also recognized us as the top company for work/life balance in 2018 for mid-sized companies. Many of our employees have been with us between 5 and 35+ years, and it's because we strive to make SofterWare a great place to have a rewarding and fulfilling career. I'd like to address your concerns personally if you'd be willing. I believe I can address your concerns during your interview process with us. When you have a moment, please reach out to me at 267-913-5208. We wish you the best in your new position. Thank you. Kathy Piunti Vice President of Human Resources
