      Colloquio per Head of Sales

      6 lug 2025
      Candidato anonimo a colloquio
      Glendale, CA
      Nessuna offerta
      Esperienza negativa
      Colloquio difficile

      Candidatura

Ho presentato la mia candidatura tramite un selezionatore. La procedura ha richiesto 2 settimane. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso Solar Optimum (Glendale, CA) nel mese di giu 2025

      Colloquio

Before you assume I’m just a disgruntled candidate, I'm not. I genuinely enjoy leaving good reviews when they’re deserved. Unfortunately, that’s not the case here. My time was wasted, I was spoken to in an abusive manner, and I feel compelled to share this experience as a cautionary tale. Before beginning what became a four-interview process, I read the reviews. The positive ones were vague and lacked depth. The negative ones? Much more detailed and emotionally honest. I should have taken the red flags more seriously, but: I’m actively seeking a new opportunity. I believe that the right leadership can transform a company. When I met the GM and CFO, I thought, “These are good guys.” They were open, self-aware, and seemed to recognize the value someone like me could bring. I met the CEO/President/Owner during the in-person interview. He was polite enough, a bit intense, but that’s not uncommon for a founder. That alone didn’t concern me. At the end of that meeting, he asked me to put together a short assignment, an idea for scaling part of their business. It sounded simple enough. Then I got a call from the recruiter: "Good news! They want to bring you in for a final interview tomorrow. The CEO wants you to prepare a full sales strategy presentation, KPIs, org structure, revenue projections, the works." Red flag. (Also, questionable in terms of CA labor law.) Still, I went ahead. I spent about 5 hours crafting a slide deck using educated assumptions, no access to actual financials, just general industry benchmarks. The next day, I delivered a data driven presentation that led into sales culture strategy. One exec jumped in with a tough but fair question, which I addressed. Things were going well... until they weren’t. The CEO and CFO stayed behind to "ask a few more questions," which turned into an aggressive, nearly 1 hour interrogation. The CEO grew visibly agitated and then dropped this: He expects whoever is hired to bring 5 salespeople with them, immediately. I responded professionally, but honestly. I explained that I couldn’t in good faith recruit anyone without first experiencing the company culture and compensation model myself. I also mentioned that their comp package was below market (e.g., $45K base with ~$200/job commission—low for the industry). He didn’t like that. He began criticizing me, saying I wasn’t a “true professional” if I couldn’t deliver 5 hires on day one. He even suggested I should be grateful to be in a room with executives (odd, considering I’ve been one). I pushed back, saying, “You’ve asked me to invest hours into this process and prepare a detailed presentation, and you haven’t even extended an offer.” That’s when things completely unraveled. He lost his temper. Accused me of “complaining.” Crumpled up my resume. Slammed the door as he exited. Yes, that really happened in 2025. This is a classic case of toxic leadership. The saddest part? Other members of the team seem genuinely committed to improvement. But when the person at the top leads with aggression, micromanagement, and control, it poisons the entire culture. You can’t fix that from below. Bottom line: No one deserves to be yelled at or treated with disrespect, especially not during an interview process. If you’re considering working here, take a hard look at the leadership style and ask yourself if that’s something you want to sign up for. Life’s too short. Sad, but that's the small company blues.
