      Colloquio

This was a very weird experience. I applied for a position and heard back the very next day asking if I could come and meet immediately. We scheduled a face to face interview for two days later. It was at a random coffee shop and not an office which seemed strange. The girl wore ripped jeans and I was in a suit. The interview lasted 20 minutes and consisted mostly of the girl telling me how stressed she was and how hard the job was to explain. I left the interview with more questions than answers. However, they wanted to schedule a video chat interview the next day so I figured I would get more info then. I got an email late that same night with conflicting information about the start time. The email said one time but the invite time was set in Green Mean Time. I confirmed just to be sure and the person responded that they didn't know what GMT was. The person who scheduled the interview didn't show up to the video chat the next day, but another candidate and a nice staff member did. That interview lasted over an hour. The interviewer reiterated that they were very anxious to hire multiple candidates. They wanted to fly someone out to California for a final interview next week. I got a little more information about the company in this interview. However, there seemed to be a lot of irregularities that conflicted with state camp compliance regulations. I figured these people must know what they are doing, but it didn't seem to add up. The interview ended with everyone seeming upbeat and I got the impression that I wouldn't be hearing from anyone until after the weekend. Later in the day I went to send a thank you email to the first person I interviewed with and I asked about salary since compensation was not discussed in either interview. I got an email three hours later that they have decided to go in a different direction and "good luck with my job search". This was the oddest most unprofessional experience. I suspect this company may be a secret cult.

Initial communication was smooth. Email exchange with HR followed by Skype interviews and phone conversations with HR. After significant conversations about the role and values of the organization, you have a call with other Community Directors followed by a conversation with the owner. Once a meet and greet happens to ensure you are the right fit,. the negotiating, hiring takes place.

      Colloquio

I saw a posting on Craigslist and filled out the online application which never asked for any of my previous work experience, just for "life stories". I was contacted the next day through email by a current Community Director with a subject line of "Let's get coffee!". I met a few days later with the CD and we indeed had coffee and talked. She was very nice but it didn't feel like a legitimate interview, more like an awkward blind date. She explained the position and the work involved and asked me for some past experiences that would prepare me for the job. She asked if I would be able to fly out to California for a day in the next week to possibly meet with Steve. I told her that would be hard since I currently have a job but would try to make it work. It seemed like a weird question for a first interview. Before the interview was over she told me that her team partner would contact me later that day for a phone call. A few hours later I was contacted by this other CD. We spoke for over an hour. She asked me many of the same questions I had been asked at the in-person interview. Then she started to prep me for a phone interview with Steve. She told me a bunch of key phrases to use with him which seemed weird because most of them had nothing to do with camp and more to do with saying how wonderful the program itself was. About an hour after that phone call I was contacted by the first CD to set up an Info-view session using Google Hangouts to talk with an HR person the next day. The video chat went fine but it seemed like I was being told how "different" and "revolutionary" the camp was over and over again. No one seemed concerned with any of my past work experience (I was never asked for a resume or anything pertaining to work) they just wanted me to believe the philosophy of the camp was special. Two days after the video chat CD number 2 (phone call) called me again telling me to text Steve (I'm concerned - has anyone seen Kate recently?) 1/2 an hour before I intended to call him. It seemed odd that I was the one making contact and not the owner of the company. I texted Steve, waited 1/2 an hour, then called. He picked up the phone, told me I was aggressive and don't let up since I called him without waiting for him to respond to my text (no one told me to wait) and that he learned a lot about me from that. Then he told me he got my text but was in a meeting and I should call him in 1/2 an hour. Why, if he got my text, didn't he tell me he was in a meeting? I waited a little over half an hour and he texted me to tell me he was "ready now". We spoke on the phone for about 40 minutes most of which was him telling me how he didn't like school because he wasn't interested in school and that kids shouldn't be forced to do things they don't want to and then be made to apologize when they fail a class. I probably spoke a total of 10 minutes. After the phone call I didn't hear from anyone for 2 days. I eventually heard from CD number 2 telling me I'm no longer a candidate for the position with no explanation as to why.

There were multiple steps in the interviewing process. They were very transparent throughout. They started with a phone call to just learn about you and give you a chance to learn about them. After that, there was a group interview on Google Hangouts, I was asked to prepare a short (3 minute) presentation - they purposely kept it vague to see where I would go with it. I was not hired, so I do not know what the next step was, but I understand it had to do with meeting the other directors from the area.
