The on-site interview is really difficult. Except that everything else is very professional. I applied online. The whole process takes a month. First is HR interview. Then scheduled me for an 1-on-1 tech interview, but then changed it to an online assessment session. Either one works for me so I am fine with that. The online assessment is hard. It's like top company level hard. After the online assessment I was told to talk to a manager. But later I was told to skip the manager interview and directly go for on-site because they thought I did a good job in the online assessment. Then here comes the story.
The on-site was scheduled at 12pm. I was there 11:50am. This is their Vancouver "office" and they are using a shared work space like WeWork. I waited in the lobby until 12:15pm. I was even thinking they forgot my interview. Then the interviewer showed up and led me to a meeting room. I was asked a system design question for an hour. Then another engineer came in and asked me a coding question. By the way, they asked you to bring your laptop for you interview. The coding question is even beyond the hard level for Leetcode. Then he gave me 90 mins in the room alone to work on it all by myself. I didn't work it out. So 90 mins later he came back and briefly told me the solution. Then I just left.
I understand sometimes company likes to ask hard question to see if the candidate can solve complex problem. But I think the question is too hard for me and even I mention the question to my friends they are shocked. This is not even for a senior level position.
