I interviewed for about 3 hours, and met with five different people on the team. Being highly qualified for the position, I was very much looking forward to this interview. A few of the people I met were very pleasant and we had productive conversations. Others were very unpleasant and it felt like they were specifically looking for ways to trip me up with their questions, including highly specific questions such as "how would I help department X achieve Y goals". Well, I need to learn a lot more about department X and what you are doing and settle into the position before I start writing out plans, so at this point the answer is "I have no idea". The person who would have been my boss in this position made me feel very welcome and excited about the prospect of adding me to the team, so the canned rejection email (without any constructive feedback or reasoning) from HR about a week later was a real blow.
