I was contacted by a recruiting firm for this position. After I was selected as a candidate, I was scheduled to be interviewed by one of the senior managers in the team over the phone primarily because he is to be away on his vacation the following week. This interview went fairly smooth with a great discussion on the job scope, and I thought we had a great rapport. Next, I was scheduled to interview with another manager in the team and one of the key collaborating group members at Palo Alto office. Both of these face to face interviews went very well, and I felt that there's a great match between the job and my expertise and skill set. Immediately after the second face-to-face interview, I had a phone interview with a senior group manager located outside of California. This phone interview also went very well, and I felt that the team and I had a great fit. A few days later, the recruiter scheduled a final interview with the director of the team over the phone as he was visiting India at the time. Primarily due to the signal quality of the phone connection, I had difficulties hearing him. I got the sense that he was feeling the same way about our interview. I also sensed that his expectation for the person in this role was rather unclear to me, and I started feeling uneasy about my fit to the position. The day after this final phone interview I contacted my recruiter to communicate my reservation, but he said that all the interviewers liked me, and I was to be offered the contract position after my background check, and basically said that I am the best candidate they have ever interviewed over the last 6 months. In retrospect, I should have requested another interview with him to clarify his expectation.
