Confidence level is the the probability that you would observe a measured result within a certain range. In hypothesis testing, one would reject a null hypothesis at a given confidence level when observing a result that lies outside of the range affiliated with that confidence level. I gave a concrete example of the Gaussian/Normal distribution in the z-test and how confidence intervals are tied to the standard deviation.
