As a Team Development Specialist (TDS) I was responsible for almost everything that happened in my region. This role is that of a regional manager. It is a challenging role, but I learned valuable skills that are easily and readily transferable to other organizations and lines of work: crisis management, conflict resolution, time management, volunteer development, training, public speaking, marketing, recruiting, delegation, application processes, partner relations, community organizing, event planning, J-1/F-1 visa and compliance, intercultural awareness, experience with ESL students, among other things.

AFS USA management does not care about it's staff, as evidenced by flippantly announcing lay-offs for the entirety of their largest department (TDS) who oversee everything that happens in their region. They are replacing the TDS role with 3-5 smaller roles per region that will pay less and require less staffing and expertise. Management "shakes things up" with staffing regularly, not dedicating itself to any one plan and not allowing it's employees to feel safe. There is high turnover for a reason.
