You learn a lot of skills in a very short amount of time. As a mechanical engineer you do everything for the project. You do calculations for heat and cooling loads. You do the system design and design every detail of the autoclave and oven. If you're up for the challenge, they'll be sure to throw more on your plate. There's good people that you'll work with. Many I can still call friends. But the apples that sour the atmosphere are in upper level and management positions. If you want to work here, go to quality. Their group operates the most professionalism.

They have no standard design practices. Everything is from scratch. There are so many variables that most equipment you design barely suffices customer needs. Often customers are upset by the lack of delivery on schedule and poor quality. There is no sticking to decisions and plans of actions. "Always Something Changing" is the main mode of being at this place. Policy changes are frequent and often conflicting. People rather cover their own tail than to own up to a mistake or better yet, find a way to blame someone else. Everything is always behind because they can't plan ahead. I have worked for four different employers and this company has the lowest level of professionalism. There is no sense of pride and project ownership. They pay was good there especially in a down economy but I'm honestly much happier not being there. They don't know how to foster growth. The mindset I got being there is the harder they whip you, the more they'll get out of you. They need to realize that only creates resentment. They don't encourage taking classes or seminars to enhance your skills. They think it is a waste of time. I've seen several engineers with master's degrees that get treated with less respect than they deserve. They don't allow you to think for yourself. Everything has to be approved through the owner. Projects stall because engineers aren't allowed to make decisions, even for the most experienced of engineers and the smallest of details. Also, take a look at how long people have been there. Very few engineers have been there for 4+ years. There is a reason for the high turnover ratio.

Thank you for your comments. I appreciate constructive criticism of the company, for it inevitably leads to changes that benefit the company and our employees. Yes, ASC does constantly change, and that's a good thing. Standardization has its place in every company, but when striving for perfection, one must be open to change and also to the risk of failure. I think back to Sr. James Dyson, who invented the Dyson vacuum cleaner. He said "I made 5,127 prototypes of my vacuum before I got it right. There were 5,126 failures. But I learned from each one." Had Dyson standardized too early, we probably wouldn't be talking about him now. ASC learns from each project, and we try our best not to repeat our mistakes. We constantly change, innovate, and improve so that our next autoclave, oven, or control system is better than the last. Our goal remains perfection. Change is exciting, and there's never a boring day at ASC. It sounds like you are a mechanical engineer. During your job interview at ASC, you were told by me that you will be in charge of designing and project managing multi-million dollar equipment projects. I make it clear to each candidate that it's a VERY difficult job, and that only 1 in 5 engineers have the intellect, work ethic, personality, and project management skills to succeed at ASC. For those that do succeed, they are rewarded with great pay and perks, challenging projects, great benefits, and a truly rewarding job. Unfortunately, an engineer who is weak at project management will probably not have the same level of success. The job involves multi-tasking between multiple projects, multiple design tasks, and multiple project management tasks. The independence of the position and the responsibilities can be dizzying, especially as shipping dates come near. And yes, because we build custom equipment, on-time delivery is always difficult. Also, one should expect that decisions and actions on million-dollar projects will always involve some form of management approval. Although ASC wasn't a right fit for you, from your review it appears that you did learn a lot from the experience, something that will prepare you for future career challenges. Good luck.
