Vantaggi

- Abnormal is very accepting of entry level positions (especially for the Security Analyst team) - The people are fun and enjoyable to work with, I made many friendships here - The company is growing - Good benefits, decent time off, remote work, etc.

Svantaggi

My main talking point here is related to the Security Analyst team. Abnormal has recently blown up on social media platforms for people looking to break into the tech industry. This is because one of their open roles as a “Security Analyst.” Has minimal job requirements and is basically a gateway into tech. The only problem is, this job isn’t very technical and if you’re someone looking to get into “cybersecurity” this position probably isn’t what you’re expecting it to be. As a Security Analyst you’re merely sorting through emails ALL DAY LONG. There is pretty much no other responsibility to this job. The job requirements are minimal because this job basically requires you to know how to read a basic email. The pay for this position is low (obviously, given the requirements are minimal) and the work is just extremely boring. You don’t learn much in this position because basic technical knowledge so this position could be your gateway into tech if you’re really struggling, but don’t expect to love this job. This department is also basically cut off from the rest of the company. There is almost no way for you to network or work with people outside your department unless you physically reach out to them and ask for a zoom call. But, there is basically no business relationships built outside of the department here. I was one of the lucky Security Analysts who got promoted to a different team. Once being promoted the first thing I noticed was how often I communicated with other departments, this was something I rarely ever did while working as a Security Analyst. I don’t think this is a bad company to work at by any means. I’m grateful Abnormal Security gave me my gateway into tech and allowed me to prove myself to later get promoted/further my career. But I wanna make everyone aware of what they’re getting into when they are hired as “Security Analysts”

Vantaggi

- High level of ownership: the eng team runs pretty lean considering the size and scale of the company, which means that there is never a lack of scope for you to own. I don't think my teams have ever worked on something that wasn't impactful and meaningful for the company. - Strong teammates: a side effect of high ownership is the hiring of strong individuals who feel a strong sense of pride in their craft and what they work on. What you get is a group of driven and sharp engineers - Leadership visibility = more opportunities for growth: the company places a strong focus on rewarding high performers with more opportunities for growth. Regular internal talent reviews mean that we're always asking how we can put strong engineers in positions to continue growing and building their skills to succeed in their role - AI enablement: Abnormal is investing heavily in its employees and how we can use AI more. It's not just a "use more AI mandate", but rather intentional ways to enable the team and deliver tangible impact through AI usage.

Svantaggi

- Running lean can be a double-edged sword: sometimes that can mean more work that needs to be done than the bandwidth available to do it. Creates difficult prioritization exercises and careful tradeoff considerations - Slow payment of tech debt: one of the side effects of moving quickly (especially in the earlier years of the company) is the accumulation of tech debt. I think teams are given a good amount of leeway to help pay this down, but sometimes falls in the priority ladder when we need to build something new to match a competitor
