Vantaggi

- The fast-paced environment can be fun when operations are running smoothly. - Provides an opportunity for people to start a career in the outdoors with low to nil previous experience in the industry. - A good social/work environment with on-site accommodation. A great sense of accomplishment when Schools would leave the center having had a good trip. A fantastic sense of comradery due to the playful nature of running activities for school trips and the close living environment with coworkers. The benefits of calling a woodland your place of work cannot be understated, Being paid to work around campfires and bumping into wildlife onsite are just some of the perks of this job. ideal for outdoor types.

Svantaggi

- Accommodation options vary widely in quality, Staff can choose to live in a converted student accommodation, the typical ratio for this is four employees to a room (one bunk each) designed for a short stay, not for year-round living. Other accommodations included small, portable-style cabins with significant electrical and plumbing issues. Resources provided for instructors to run activities were very limited. Particularly in peak season when on-site numbers of students could reach 500+. Activity Sessions can be up to 2 Hrs in length. Very subpar standards of training were given for new staff, In-house training did not prepare many instructors for the realities of the job, and late applicants were often expected to start working almost immediately when arriving on their first day with no training. The job used to advertise the guarantee of earning a minimum of two NGB outdoor qualifications, However, a majority of staff received no such benefit by the end of the working season. “Overnight duty” required one employee to sleep on a campsite occupied by the school they were working with, in a storage tent between the hours of 9 pm to around 7:30 am, on standby to deal with any issues school teachers needed assistance with. This was done for no additional pay. Working days can be unacceptably long, sometimes requiring a 7:30 am start until 1 pm, a one-hour break at lunch, followed by a working day from 2 pm - 9 pm, and then a night duty until 7:30 am, A near-continuous 24 hours of having to be onsite with responsibility for a school group. Poor communication from head office to management and from management to staff.
