Many team members are deeply committed to helping every child learn to read, and the people on the ground care a lot about the work and the schools they serve. The mission is inspiring and the product delivers.

Leadership has increasingly prioritized revenue over mission alignment. There is a clear disconnect between the company’s stated goal of helping every child learn to read and internal directives that discourage working with smaller or lower-enrollment schools because they are not profitable enough. That contradiction is difficult to reconcile for employees who joined because they believed in equitable access. Executive communication style can also be challenging. Late-night emails (9pm, midnight, 2am) with urgent or harsh tone create a culture of anxiety rather than trust. Instead of inspiring alignment, it often feels reactive and financially driven. There is limited transparency around strategic decisions, and morale has suffered as a result. The product is strong, but leadership behavior and messaging undermine the mission and the team.

ZERO investment in tech debt or developer experience You cannot have an AI focused org without a heavy focus on testing or the systems to support it. Over-working employees then getting upset at them when a mistake happens and the organization doesn't have the processes or support needed to catch said issues Complete inability to see more than 5 feet in front of us Purely reactive never proactive Lots of talk about "failing fast" yet never seeming to learn from their mistakes. No test environment or proper staging environment, throw stuff over the wall Verbally abusive and temperamental CTO long long workdays, after-hours and weekend work Crunch time is all the time
