Vantaggi
AP's mission is noble, it's a not-for-profit, and it is doing good for society in the U.S. and around the world. I have a great sense of pride and mission working here, which makes up for some of the cons. I've made great friends here and there is a real sense of community in many departments. The workforce is diverse and there can be great opportunities to travel and also to be a part of important events. AP generally treats its workers fairly and humanely. Mass layoffs are rare, although the workforce has certainly been reduced as revenue has fallen.
Svantaggi
Compensation can be widely inconsistent. Some folks earn well below market rate, and then others have much better deals negotiated. The future for AP (and for many large media companies) offers very little certainty. Revenue peaked in 2007-08 around $750M per year and is now hovering in the high $500M's. The losses have outnumbered the gains in recent years and it's easier to imagine that trend continuing than it is to see a path that leads back to consistent growth. AP has taken and is taking some measures to innovate, but these efforts are small relative to the size of the challenges ahead.
