Vantaggi

Read the comments below on the BR culture of feedback. You decide.

Svantaggi

Backroads prides itself on the method its trip leaders use to give feedback to one another. Radical Candor. In theory, you put oneself in the frame of mind of caring deeply about a colleague and their success, and then give pointed feedback (negative and positive) about their performance. It sounds good in theory. But without a genuine generosity of spirit for the other person and desire for their success, you get what I experienced at BR, a license to discourage, demean and demoralize a colleague with whom you have a beef. I experienced Radical Candor as no more than cover for weaponized criticism. (A direct violation of BR “professed” Guiding Principles.) The hostility drove me to resign the job I had wanted so much. I’ve heard from another colleague of her plans to do the same because of her bad experience in this feedback culture. BR, take heed. You’ve got some badly incompetent and unkind players on your trip leader teams doing damage to human beings and to your brand.

Thank you for your review and thoughtful feedback. As you said, we do pride ourselves in our communication training and openness to feedback at Backroads, so it was disappointing to hear that your experience communicating with some of your co-leaders while you were in the field left you feeling disheartened. In addition to the robust training that each new leader receives, our veteran field staff leaders attend a yearly, multi-day training that covers topics like enhanced bike mechanic skills and effectively utilizing the feedback practices we teach (based on the Radical Candor method developed by Kim Scott). We’ll continue to work with our team of mentors to focus on ensuring these practices are actively applied in the field.

Vantaggi

I find that its a great workplace where folks are encouraged to speak up, take initiative, and problem solve together. I think it reflects well that there are many tenured people at the company.

Svantaggi

There are many systems that do not always seamlessly work together so it can take extra effort to find the resources that exist & high cost of living in Bay Area can be challenging to keep up with.

Vantaggi

The product (luxury active vacations) is phenomenal. It's great to be able to have confidence in what we're selling and know we are leading the industry in quality. Coworkers are great - hard working and fun. They also do a good job with benefits, especially trip credits and retirement plans.

Svantaggi

Bay Area cost of living is quite high and while the sales role isn't a tech sales job, increased compensation would go a long way considering working remotely (full time) is essentially not an option.
