Vantaggi

This company was full of very bright, passionate, and hard-working colleagues. As a startup, there were ample opportunities to grow quickly, gain new skills, and learn from upper management.

Svantaggi

Leadership at the company wouldn't commit to a vision or make hard financial decisions. Moreover, staff were expected to work extreme hours during election season. While middle management cared about its people, upper management did not. HR processes were lacking. Employees were often fired without warning for unclear causes.

Vantaggi

* Decent entry and mid level pay * Healthcare, dental, and vision are paid for by the company * Semi-transparent pay tiers, and a guaranteed raise after 6 months

Svantaggi

Basecamp takes the idea that this industry is just predatory marketing to old people to an entirely new level. The founder's sole focus is on extracting as much money from email lists as possible, regardless of what the client's program history or goals might be. This approach forces people into extremely high volume fundraising just to meet some very unrealistic monthly goals with content that really amps up the fear. The whole thing makes you feel scummy for taking part. The founder is also one of the cruelest and most bizarre people I've had the misfortune of meeting. He frequently belittles and bullies staff for supposed infractions, and he spends his days requiring the company to read business books over email. These infractions can be anything from not responding to an email within 30 minutes or disagreeing with something he says. It's really weird and creates an impossibly toxic work environment. He also frequently throws daily operations and client relationships into a tailspin by changing course or the overall business strategy seemingly every few weeks, and it's up to junior staff to smooth things over and figure out what he's even talking about. Honestly, it's very funny in retrospect, but in the moment it makes you extremely worried about your job security and standing at the company. On the operations front, the retainer structure makes very little sense. The company only collects full retainer when it raises at least double the amount of the retainer, which makes it impossible to predict cash flow month over month. The goals are also unrealistic, which frequently puts employees in tough spots with clients when the team misses the monthly goal. I feel it also contributes to the toxic work environment and lack of work/life balance by making Democratic fundraising a zero-sum game that requires you to send 300 emails a month about the Russians or whatever. The firm's approach isn't a recipe for long-term success in any regard. Overall, you absolutely shouldn't work here unless you're really desperate for work. The culture, approach, and values that the founder champions make for the most toxic and bizarre environment I've ever experienced, and I see little reason for that to change as long as he's in charge.

Vantaggi

Worked with some great people (though most of them have now left or been fired).

Svantaggi

Basecamp Strategy presents itself as a forward-thinking, progressive company. But in reality, it is not. Far from it. To echo the previous raters, this place is a mess. There was no real HR person. There were people with cutesy titles like "head of people" and "chief integrity officer," but you actually didn't know what they did. New employees were promised they would have a new job title in three months, but that's because staff turnover is crazy. As a person of color, I did not feel welcomed or included in the company culture. If you're not white, fresh out of college, and willing to kiss some butt, you are invisible. It was very clear that the CEO was unprofessional and arrogant, but no one had the courage to step up to him. The company morale was affected on more than one occasion because of this dynamic. There are a lot of hard-working people at Basecamp; they deserve better.
