I love teaching and this place provides solid curriculum for after school and AP reviews even during the pandemic.

I wish I have more students to fill in the hours!

Vantaggi

Flexible scheduling if you're assertive and willing to accept fewer hours. If you like teaching you'll have fun with the majority of students. I worked here for a few years because I wanted a temporary job which would let me take long weekends and multi-month vacations for travel and rock climbing. At 25 or 28 bucks per hour it's obviously not going to support a family, help you save, or advance a real career, but for my purposes--single person who just wanted to have time and money for multi-month climbing and mountaineering trips--it was perfect; I couldn't think of another job that would facilitate that lifestyle.

Svantaggi

It's important to establish boundaries with the business owner, who is pushy and will try to schedule you for more hours than you want. That is she'll schedule you too much if you're a good tutor--if you're bad or if the students dislike you for any reason she'll quietly dial back your hours instead of firing you directly. Payments are often erratic because her clients pay erratically, but she prioritizes payments to the most vocal and annoyed tutors; again, being assertive but respectful is helpful. Like I said, if you want a real, comfortable job then look elsewhere; you should have a very good reason for working here, like "I'm a liberal arts person biding my time until I write a killer screenplay" or "I'm a climbing bum who just wants a super-flexible job." Another con is that she tries to classify tutors as independent contractors, though this might have changed since I left in 2014. It's important to realize that this is a service job in which your clients' opinions of you directly influence the number of hours you get, and therefore the amount of money you make. It's also important to realize that service jobs are HARD; talking for eight hours teaching calculus is WAY harder than programming for eight hours (which is what I do now). Lastly, the schedules are sent out the night before around 11pm, so it's very difficult to plan your life in advance with this job. Expect to work from roughly 3pm to 9pm unless you specifically request a few of those hours off. It turned out that I wanted to do social stuff with my friends a couple of nights per month, so I had to request that time off in advance.
