This is the maximum amount of time allowed under the law and is by all means optional. They could just as easily destroy the information upon your resignation. This is also all being contracted to a private investigation firm with long histories of leaking data they've collected. Extremely underpaid compared to other positions in the same job market. Management does not seem to listen to complaints about job security concerns. They will flatly lie to you and tell you that no one will lose their job if a contract expires and then proceed to lay people off once it does.
