Vantaggi

Good location and industry. Kirkland is a fun place to work with many restaurants in the area. BoxWave has some friendly people to work with. Hands-on experience with latest mobile technology. Snacks are ordered from Costco and provided by the company every other week. Casual work environment and attire. The toilet paper is the “soft kind”.

Svantaggi

Very low compensation. Long hours - (45 hour minimum) for “full-time” (salaried) employees, and up to 40 hours for hourly employees. Benefits such as holiday pay, paid time off, and health insurance are only given to those who are on salary. Sick days are counted as vacation days, so if you’re sick you must use your vacation time to miss work. No 401K is offered. Paychecks are sometimes deposited late. There is a tense work environment due to obvious favoritism. It’s a small company ~20 employees, aside from the few upper management employees, all others are undervalued. High turnover rate for employees – most people don’t stay long. This creates a lack of cohesiveness and team building. Because of high turnover rate, some employees are also juggled to fill multiple roles and needs (ex. customer service rep being switched to inventory) and job descriptions can sometimes be vague. Many employees are hired based on personal relationships, rather than skill or experience. Warehouse employees are mistreated and are often expected to do non-company related work, personal favors for the CEO, and sometimes even custodial work. There is a strong lack of communication and trust, due to CEO not being present until late in the evenings most days (last two hours of the workday), if at all. Salaried employees often have to stay late to accommodate CEO’s schedule. Communication between CEO & employees is awful – most personal emails go without a response and are sometimes ignored, denoting a minimal level of respect towards lower-tier employees. Projects are poorly planned; they are often conceptualized and are sometimes expected to be complete during the same week. It is also not uncommon for projects to be assigned, completed, and never put to use. There is a lot of micromanagement, and “hand-holding” (for lack of a better term); every single task must be approved before execution (veteran employees included), even minuscule things like social media posts & tweets. The approval process immensely slows down project completion time; subsequently, employee efficiency is often questioned. Creative and web development work can sometimes take weeks or months to complete due to indecisiveness from the upper management. The disruption in communication between the CEO/upper management and other employees creates a sense of distrust and severely limits the creative potential of those employees. Computers are heavily monitored, and like previous reviewers mentioned, there are definitely suspicious activities (side operations to supplement income) and business practices, as well as unnecessary surveillance. There is no official human resources department, and all related inquiries are directed to the CEO’s wife. Employees are rarely given any sort of performance review, and raises/bonuses are even rarer. Some employees have gone years without any adjustment to compensation. There are no incentives and good work goes unnoticed more often than not.
