While working for Cartier sounds like a dream, in reality, it’s a true nightmare. This brand is entirely dysfunctional, from the way it operates to the blatant disrespect it treats its employees with. I have worked retail for over a decade; never in my career have I seen anything like what happens here. In short: they hold over-qualified people captive in low, entry-level positions and keep them there by leading them on with the promise of a promotion “soon”. One salesman with years of prior experience spent SIX years working as an assistant, service advisor, and every other title before being offered the position he wanted. If you have years of experience in sales, have an excellent client book, meet your KPIs, etc. It does not matter to these people. You will remain a boutique assistant or sales assistant for years. And during busy times you will have to take clients and sell to them! But because your title hasn’t changed, you won’t be making any commission. On one occasion, a salesperson was out for the day, so I assisted their client on their behalf. The client was so happy with my service that he asked for my card- I told the client I do not have cards as an assistant but would be glad to provide my work number if they ever needed help making an appointment with said salesperson or help when their salesperson is gone. Management told the client no and told me I shouldn’t have offered my personal work number as the client should reach out to a salesperson only. The client was confused, and I felt shut down for going above and beyond while helping one of my colleagues. This is just one personal example of management keeping people who want to grow in a lower position. All my colleagues and I were told this is a company you can grow in that encourages its employees to do well and rewards hard work. Do not give in to it; they don’t just overpromise and under-deliver; they never deliver. - I have seen higher-ups from corporate treat black colleges as if they were “the help”; telling them to clean things up while they are busy doing their actual job. - I have never seen such a strong sense of individuality in a workforce. You can be drowning in a sea of clients and yet people who are free doing nothing will say no when asked for help. Management included. - All good talent leaves for this reason. I could go on but will finish with this: the technology used. Everything we have to do is done from a surface tablet that does not have the processing power to withstand the workload. Imagine you have a Client in front of you. They spend hundreds of thousands of dollars regularly, today they’re in a rush to pick up a quick gift, but your tablet takes 10-15 minutes to boot up and another 10 minutes to process a payment. The client leaves upset.
